The Importance of the Gut-Brain Axis

What is the Gut-Brain Axis?

The gut–brain axis is the constant, two-way communication network linking your gut and your brain. It connects your digestive system, nervous system, immune system and gut microbiome into one deeply integrated system that influences how you think, feel and function every day.

For a long time, we thought of the gut as simply a place where food is digested and nutrients are absorbed. We now know that this view is far too narrow.

Your gut is home to trillions of microorganisms - collectively known as the gut microbiome - that play a central role in regulating mood, stress responses, immune function, inflammation and even cognitive performance.

In fact, the gut is often referred to as the “second brain”. It contains its own network of neurons (the enteric nervous system), produces many of the same chemical messengers used by the brain, and communicates with the brain continuously via nerves, hormones and immune signals.

This communication isn’t one-directional. Just as the gut can influence the brain, the brain also influences the gut. Stress, emotions, sleep quality and daily routines can all affect digestion, gut motility, inflammation and the balance of microbes living in the gut.

That’s why feelings of stress or anxiety can show up physically as bloating, discomfort or changes in appetite - and why long-term gut health can shape how resilient, focused or balanced you feel mentally.

  • 1) The Vagus Nerve

This is a major nerve highway linking the gut and brain - it carries microbial signals from gut bacteria directly to your brain. (Imperial Col...)

  • 2) Neurotransmitters

Gut microbes influence chemicals like serotonin, dopamine and GABA - which affect mood, motivation and stress response. In fact, around 90–95% of serotonin is produced in the gut. (Axa Health)

  • 3) The 'Second Brain' - enteric nervous system

This is a complex network of more than 100 million nerve cells that line your gut. This ‘second brain’ primarily controls digestion, but it also communicates with the main brain, which is why poor gut health and digestive issues can trigger an emotional reaction. (Axa Health)

  • 4) Immune System & Gut Microbiota

Gut microbes produce chemicals that influence inflammation, immune function and nerve signalling. Around 70% of the immune system lives in the gut and immune messages influence inflammation, which can affect brain function. (Northerheal...)

Why the Gut-Brain axis matters

Your gut isn’t just about digestion - it’s central to your mood, stress resilience, focus, immune function and even chronic disease risk.

Feeling “off” mentally can sometimes start in the gut - not the brain. Therefore, supporting yourgut-brain axis int he right way can provide an abundance of benefits to improve how your feel day to day.

More Stable Mood

A well-supported gut helps regulate the production of key neurotransmitters involved in mood and emotional balance.

When the gut–brain axis is functioning smoothly, many people experience fewer emotional highs and lows and a greater sense of steadiness day to day.

Better Stress Resilience

Your gut plays a role in how your body responds to stress. Supporting the gut–brain connection may help calm the stress response, making it easier to feel grounded and recover more quickly from everyday pressures.

Clearer Focus and Mental Clarity

Balanced gut signalling supports clearer communication between the gut and brain. Over time, this can contribute to improved concentration, mental clarity and the ability to stay focused without feeling overstimulated.

Stronger Immune Defence

A large part of the immune system lives in the gut. Supporting a healthy gut environment helps regulate immune responses, contributing to stronger, more balanced immune defence throughout the body.

Lower Systemic Inflammation

A diverse, well-nourished gut microbiome helps keep inflammation in check. Supporting gut health may reduce low-grade inflammation, which is linked to both physical and mental wellbeing.

the state of gut health in the uk

Most people in the UK aren’t giving their gut-brain axis the best foundation.

  • Reduces gut microbiome diversity — fewer beneficial bacteria
  • Increases inflammatory signals from the gut
  • Weakens gut barrier function, making communication “noisier”
